Arizona Federal Judge Runs a Filter

A person goes to a crowded Arizona mall, pulls out high powered assault weapon, kills 6 people and wounds 14 (including a US Senator), yet his mug shot is being withheld from the press because it may invade his privacy.  This ‘filter’ by an Arizona federal judge is aiming to protect accused killer Jared Lee Loughner from “unwarranted invasions of personal privacy.”  A final hearing on the issue takes place this week.

Loughner’s defense attorneys are running ‘challenges’ and ‘screens’ stating that releasing the photos could stigmatize Loughner.  They claim that the mug shots would humiliate the suspect and this information is by nature, highly private.   The defense team is also running a ‘preempt’ claiming: “The purpose of FOIA is to shed light on the federal government’s performance of its duties, and there is nothing about the federal government’s duties that the mug shots would shed light on.”

The press could use many offensive plays to win their position.  They can ‘bait’ the opponent to argue the issue and expose them with a ‘mirror’ since public opinion would probably not support a cold blooded murderer.  A ‘fiat’ would be most direct and probably successful play since the public would not be very sympathetic for the perpetrator’s right to privacy of his mug shots and one could run on the merits of this argument. One could definitely ‘recast’ this filter by arguing that the photo of the perpetrator under arrest was less humiliating than the embarrassment and suffering that the victims and their families have endured.

This play was decoded by the press, who is seeking the photographs and have the best angle to play this issue.

This filter may benefit the defense of Loughner as the press would have less opportunity to form a pre-trial public opinion.  The cons of this play is that it may negatively characterize the defense team as only sensitive to the feelings of a man who murdered a young child and 5 other innocent people and horrifically wounded others.

This play could be considered good or bad – just depends on which side of the court room you are sitting.  It is good for the defense team of Loughner, but bad for the federal government to protect privacy rights of a man who so callously killed and wounded so many people.

Pause- Freezing Spending

[This is an example of a Pause] [Blog & Audio]

President Obama announced in his 2011 State of the Union Address his plan to freeze spending in the government’s domestic budget.

The national deficit has been a big political issue for the past decade.

Democrats and Republicans have always argued over who has the best plan for the budget and to solve the national debt.

President Obama was voted for over his change campaign.

The President plans to freeze a big amount of the national debt for the future budge for five years.

Parts of the budget that he proposes to freeze or decrease includes military funding and funding for social security and such.

This is a pause play because it is a temporary cut in the national budget.

The budget will be temporary suspended for five years.

Trial Balloon- WVIL

[This is an example of a Trial Balloon.] [Blog & Audio]

Expos are full of trail balloons. Artefact ran a trail ballon at the 2011 CES Expo.

They showcased the prototype product WVIL during the 2011 CES Expo.

WVIL stands for Wireless Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens.

The pre-production product was showcased during the CES Expo.

The camera adapts to smart phones and the lens is detachable.

Even with the lens detached, the device is able to take photos.

Since the camera adapts to a smart phone, photos can be directly uploaded to the internet, including social-media sites, such as Facebook and Flickr.

When the video of the product surfaced on youtube many proclaimed it to be a hoax. But WVIL’s creators, Artefact, claimed on their website that it is in fact a real prodcut.

There is also a website dedicated to the product.

Leak- Coke Recipe

[This is an example of a Leak.] [Audio & Blog]

Coca-Cola, commonly known as coke, keeps their recipe under great protection.

Coke was officially produced in 1886 by Pemberton.

In 1887, the recipe was bought by Asa Candler who ordered the recipe to never be written down again so it wouldn’t be stolen and copied.

But according to This American Life, the recipe for the top-secret recipe has been found.

This American Life announced that they found the recipe in possession of a widow in Georgia.

The recipe found was leaked on air by This American Life and was online through various news sources.

After This American Life announced their finding, they tested the recipe with experts and average consumers. Most could not tell the difference but it missed the full flavor of coke. There is a special ingredient called “Merchandise 7X” according to TIME online.

The recipe found is now in a bank vault owned by the Coca-Cola company.

Coca-cola claims the recipe isn’t the real deal while This American Life claims it is the real recipe.

The found recipe comes close to the actual taste but does not present the certain fizzy carbonation of coke.
